Most Helpful Hints: Cleaning Pots and Pans

If you have a really filthy pot &mdash especially one that has dried-on or baked-on food, try this:

  1. Put 2 - 4 teaspoons ( 10 - 20 ml) of baking soda in the pot.
  2. Add enough water that all of the dried food bits are soaking.
  3. At this point you can let the pot soak for an hour or two, or &mdash if you want to speed up the process &mdash you can put the pot on a burner, turn up the heat and bring the water to a boil. Immediately remove from heat, and let pot cool.
  4. Scrape the pot with a plastic spatula or wooden spoon, until most of the food bits are detached.
  5. Pour the water with the food bits down the toilet, or (if there are no pieces of meat or fish) into your compost.
  6. Now wash the pot in warm soapy water, just as you would any other dish.
